Gus’s First 5K

Gus’s First 5K

Last week I saw a sign for Leander Old Time Days, so I looked it up online and discovered that it included a dog friendly 5K! I decided to sign up and run with Gus. We debated whether David should sign up and run with Kat, but we knew she would hate to have to wait at the start and finish line, so he signed up too.

Everyone was excited at the starting line.

Gus was very impatient waiting for the race to actually start, but finally it was time to go and we were off! Gus ran strong for the first mile or so and then he started dragging. David tried to just run/walk with Kat, but she didn’t like if Gus and I were ahead of her, so we ended up all walking together during parts of the race because we didn’t want Kat to overdo it.  Finally, when the finish line was in sight, Gus and I ran ahead so I could take a picture of David and Kat crossing the finish line. It took longer for them to catch up to us than I thought and then I saw this.

I guess the last 1/4 mile or so, Kat decided she was done for sure and was not going to go anymore, so David scooped her up to finish.  Sadly, this will probably be Kat’s last 5K. She still loves her walks, but doesn’t have the endurance for a race anymore and doesn’t want to pace herself when everyone around her is running.

We let her and Gus rest at the finish line.

Then we slowly walked to the car and Kat and Gus did a cool down soak in the pool.
